Barclays sells Egyptian arm

Barclays Bank PLC has completed the sale of its retail and corporate banking business in Egypt.

The business has been sold to Attijariwafa Bank SA with all of Barclays Bank Egypt's 1,500 employees and 56 branches becoming part of Attijariwafa Bank.

Jes Staley, CEO of Barclays Group, said the announcement brings it another step closer to completing the restructuring on Barclays.

"I would like to thank our colleagues in Egypt who have worked tirelessly to ensure a smooth transition for our customers, and I wish them well in their future with Attijariwafa Bank SA.”

“Barclays remains committed to its Middle East and north Africa business as we continue to strengthen our franchise in the region.”
