Banks come to the aid of Grenfell Tower victims

Darius McQuaid | 07:15 Friday 23rd June 2017

The banking industry has offered assistance to the survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire who have lost all access to their bank cards, accounts and ID, according to the BBA.

As a result, the major banks have tried to make it easier for the former residents to gain access to their accounts and funds in a number of ways:

Santander

• Working with the Red Cross and local charities to gauge the best way they can offer support.
• Affected insurance customers are in alternative accommodation and have been provided emergency funds.

Barclays

• Branch staff are helping customers who no longer have ID or cards to obtain same-day replacements for debit cards and making emergency overdraft facilities available if required.
• They are also accepting donated clothes to help victims, and have set up an account to collect donations for those affected.

Lloyds Group (including Halifax and Bank of Scotland)

• Have made emergency funds available to affected customers.
• Local staff are to provide support to customers who no longer possess their bank cards or ID.

RBS and NatWest

• Contacting affected customers to offer assistance and cash for those who no longer have access to cards. Includes making temporary address changes and reordering debit cards.
• Offering emergency cash via branches and telephone.

Nationwide

• Local branches to provide emergency cash, arrange replacement cards and any other additional support needed.

Co-op

• Getting in touch with affected customers who need financial help.
