Landlord confidence reaches seven-year low

Sam Monk | 13:58 Thursday 22nd August 2019

Only 29% of landlords have positive expectations for their letting business over the next three months, according to recent research.

This was a 15 percentage-point decrease from the 44% recorded the same time last year.

The latest BVA BDRC Landlords Panel for Q2 2019 also found that the five confidence indices — capital gains, rental yields, UK financial market, UK private sector and own letting business — were at their lowest levels in seven years.

Other highlights from the research included:

  • capital gains confidence fell to 23%
  • rental yields prospects dropped to 39%
  • 15% remained optimistic about the UK private rented sector

“The private rented sector plays a significantly important part of the UK housing market, so it is concerning many landlords have a bleak outlook at the moment,” said Damian Thompson, director of mortgages at Aldermore (pictured above).
